About
Maureen is a Teaching Professor of Art History in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. She pursued her graduate studies in Paris as a recipient of the Bourse Châteaubriand en sciences sociales and followed her PhD at the University of Texas at Austin with a post-doctoral fellowship at the Department of Western Illuminated Manuscripts at the British Library. She held teaching positions at the American University of Paris and Saint Louis University before arriving at UMSL. Maureen's scholarship has focused primarily on her specialty in the history and visual culture of the medieval world. New interests include medievalist approaches to contemporary culture including, especially, gamification of the humanities classroom and game integration into the classroom through storytelling and the Reacting to the Past pedagogy. During her 20th year of teaching - that just happened to land in the middle of a pandemic - while serving her 7th year as department chair and teaching three online classes, she decided it was a wise time to take a graduate class in game design. The earlier posts in this blog, dated to Fall 2020, are from that class. In 2023-24, during a transitional leave following her 9th year as chair (whew!), she is pursuing a certificate in Serious Games and Simulations from the University of Missouri. New posts will be in response to the Advanced Games for Learning class in Spring 2024.
